I normally suck at gift-giving (Xmas is that yearly reminder how little I know about the people in my life), but this year I think I've done a good job for my Dad and his partner. Ended up making them a hamper with single origin ONA coffee beans, chocolate-coated ginger, vanilla & pistachio nougat, local blueberry & vanilla jam, local lemon-myrtle infused olive oil, and half bottles of port and salted-caramel kahlua.

Next year I'll just go back to gift cards.

I only have to buy for Disco plus my niece and nephew, and Disco is the only person who buys for me. We tend to do pretty well at buying gifts for each other.

I really, really dislike getting people gift cards. Just feels a bit too lazy.

If I was going to do something like that, learn some origami and give them cash folded into an entertaining shape. Australian currency can hold up to quite a lot of abuse.

I agree... only exception being if the recipient isn't local, there's only so many mail-friendly gifts you can buy. Although even then I tend to just shop online but have the parcel sent direct to their house... OR if the person is working on a project and you know the gift card will help (ie: we are doing up gardens at the moment so a Bunnings Gift Card would be appropriate and well received).

I think a targeted gift card isn't too bad. A general one is crap, but if it's to a store they'd shop at anyway...

Work gave me a gift card to Myer this year as its Christmas thing. I shouldn't be ungrateful, though it does mean I have to go out of my way to use it.

I didn't realise you could use gift cards to buy gift card, that's interesting!

Never thought of doing that. Suppose it only works if the place you get the gift card for sells gift cards.

I used the last two gift cards I was given to buy groceries. Disappointed I can't do that again.

Happy to receive gift cards as there's always something I'm eyeing off in a store somewhere.

But yeah, not a fan of giving them out :D

I like a gift card that is targetted...ie: a store I love such as certain clothing lines, homewares stores like Pillow Talk / Bed Bath n Table etc. I'm not that keen on Coles/Myer cards, grog shop cards, etc - it's nice that someone gave me something and I am grateful, but it just kinda makes me think "they don't really know me". For me, gift giving is an art and selecting the right gift is important.
