Evidently, we lead very different lives. At best, I occasionally make do with a key.
It tends to be a bit more of a country thing tbh, Orange is still a decent sized town but it's still very common seeing farmers getting about with their knives, and it's more prevalent the more rural you get.

That being said, if CCW was legal here I'd do that too!

Knives are so useful. I took my Swiss army knife to Tanzania and everyone wondered why. Then on the camping safari we had badly knotted up ropes and stuff and the knife came in handy.

And then I got caught with it in my pocket when I went in a nightclub. Completely forgot I had it.

I still take it and the first aid kit with me when I go hiking.

Yeah I pretty much carry one everwhere, I have my go to, a stupidly expensive Spyderco Paramilitary 2, and then, for dressier situations just a small buck folder.

Comes in handy a lot! Still, got to think about it, airports aren't a fan unless they're checked in

Could definitely conceive of scenarios where a knife would be useful, especially when doing any outdoor activity like hiking. For instance:

As someone who grew up in the city and now lives out country, it really is just a difference of area. It's totally normal out here to carry one, usually people have them on their belts.

Although very illegal, when I worked out at a servo in Gilgandra (population 2,700) and it was not uncommon for more than one vehicle to pull up for petrol and a feed, leave their windows down and a rifle sitting on their dash.. have their feed, get in the ute and take off to go shoot some Kangaroos.

No overnight police station, so no real worry about getting caught, it's just what they did

Fuck we still get shit like that all the time (we've got a big fucking roo population nearby). Hard to be angry at them when they're fixing some of the problem. We just kindly ask them to store the ammo separately, or at least the bolt. Yet to have anyone with a loaded gun (apart from when I was working in Dandenong... yeah). Also, yet to come across anyone dumb enough to argue with me on that point.

A calzone is kinda like a pizza folded in half and enclosed so the toppings become fillings. Was quite nice.

I used to do that all the time when I made pizza dough because I was avoiding cheese. I called them pizza pockets and thought I was doing something original. Turns out everything has been done before and done much better.

Yeah, nothing is original these days.

A colleague at work recently mentioned that at the think tank workshops upper management had set up, he found that many of the ideas he had, there was work that had already been done into those things in the past. Makes you wonder why they don't bring back things that worked in the past and is needed again... then run the think tank work shop to get original ideas.

Sometimes I wonder if we as a society (warning: stepping onto my soapbox) put too much emphasis on creativity as an essential character trait. That people strive for the opportunity to prove themselves worthy of coming up with their own solutions to things that they neglect the long history of other people similarly trying to solve that problem. But then all we'd be is students of history - something that's wise in practice, but not really praise-worthy in a culture that emphasises the individual as successful. The world doesn't need out-of-the-box thinking. It doesn't need brainstorming sessions. It doesn't need auteurs shaping an unknown path. We'd suffice with people who'd see what works and try their best to replicate that.

I believe it comes down to the activity at the end of the day and I also believe there needs to be more of an emphasis in society for people to understand what's come before them before creating something new. Too many times people have implemented something that replaces something that was working well already because they feel the need to create something that's solely theirs (when it's usually a retreading of past ideas done differently). Adds no value from my point of view and is often more disastrous to efficiency.

But then I'm a fan of the saying...
If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.

i do carry a small combi knife type thing roughly 50% of the time im out and about. even when not working.
usually i go by car, which is very close to me, and in my car is about 600$ in tools. so i usually feel i can solve most things without having something in my pocket immediately. i just walk a few meters and get what i need.
ive never felt i needed to carry a knife for security, but for (as disco has said) a tool.

Glad I bought a second cake for a farewell afternoon tea today. More attendees have been added. Also glad I had stock of chips in the draw so I could scale stock accordingly as well.
