And to top it all off, my mother texts me today to tell me that Dad has Parkinson's.

That's no good mate, good luck to him :(

Today marks a week since my girls left me for every fortnightly weekend. It's been very quiet and the dog is sulking majorly hard.

Decided to go visit Dad yesterday, probably more for me to see he was ok given the news.. couldn't find my leather jacket so just rode in a t-shirt and vest instead and realised on my return that maybe I should have worn sunscreen.. this is the result on both arms from wrist to nearly my shoulder (between my gloves and t-shirt).

I did better than that, wrapped both my arms in some damp cotton sheets to take the heat out of them last night and been using aloe vera every few hours since.. but the damage is done, lesson learned!

I really don't get how anyone could vote for that numpty. This whole saga keeps getting worse and worse, and you'd think that Joyce had at least enough sense to know to stop digging. But no!

Didn't he only get kicked out a few months ago, then immediately voted back in, and now he's gone again?

He's not gone, just relegated to the back bench (he was the leader of the National party, so by default the deputy prime minister), and now he's a former leader lame-ducking it up in parliament presumably found a Tony Abbott (or Kevin Rudd) and biding his time in hopes of regaining the leadership.

People really get under my skin sometimes.

At work, we have a kitchen which is only accessible by our staff and volunteers (families/guests have a separate kitchen area) and last year there were several instances where personal food items belonging to staff had 'disappeared', presumably having been eaten by Volunteers. So I placed a sign on the fridge that said "Items in this fridge are personal food items belonging to staff or volunteers, please do not consume items unless they belong to you".

Recently, a couple of volunteers had a spray about a few issues including the 'rude' sign on the fridge suggesting that they were stealing food items, so last week I removed the sign... went to the fridge this morning and noticed that several boxes of chocolates (gift boxes) which I use as gifts for our guests had been opened and 80% of their contents consumed over the weekend.

Can't win either way - have a sign in place and you're an asshole, don't have a sign in place and people think it's a free-for-all.

Stick with being the asshole - I'd take some whinging self-entitled jerks over losing gifts for guests and the like.

Just put the signs back up and tell the next scab that complains that stuff was stolen after the sign went down and that if it happens again, a more thorough investigation will take place. Those complainers will probably be visiting the fridge less.

Ironically, we had a (staff funded) morning tea at work this today where a lot of food was left over. I went to get a piece of sponge cake after lunch and the whole thing is gone now. The scabs even left the empty container. No wonder public servants gets so much flak.

My thoughts too, although anyone who knows me would tell you I'm reasonably comfortable being a jerk.

Big believer in the fact that if you're going to have a hard discussion, you're better off having it early.

To be fair, I think this is an unspoken rule of any office. The remnants of any morning or afternoon tea, once left unattended, is better eaten than wasted. At least at my last department, someone would go around the floor and tell people there's leftovers that need to be consumed.

Same - multiple groups on the floor I work on. Common etiquette is leave it alone while they're having their thing in the common kitchen area, but once the event is over, its first come first served.

I agree, leftovers from lunches and morning teas are generally fair game... however, I also used to be a volunteer here before I became manager, and never in a million years would I open a gift box of chocolates that I found in a fridge or cupboard because I was hungry. It's very clear that volunteers and staff are expected to feed themselves, with the exception of breakfast for the overnight volunteers where we provide toast, cereal, tea and coffee.

Only thing is that the sponge cake went back in the fridge after morning tea. Usually if it's put away that's a sign that it's not a free for all item.

So unless one of my team went to get a piece and left it out, someone else took it out of the fridge to dig into and the rest of the lemmings followed.

The laziness of leaving the packaging for someone else to throw away just annoys me that bit more. They didn't pay for it. They should at least have the courtesy to clean up after taking the last slice.

You're not the arsehole for putting the sign on the fridge... they're the arseholes for stealing the food.

Exactly, and it was a perfectly fine sign too.

It would be like thinking a speed limit sign implies everyone is speeding and we should take them away because some people are offended.

Passive aggressive notes are always a part of office life. Just imagine the alternative - either actual confrontation or leaving the problem unaddressed.

My favourite was one bathroom stall where 6 different "how to use the toilet correctly" pages were taped up.
