Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Yesterday I had a job interview over the phone. It was basically me speaking into a void for half an hour - almost no input or feedback from them apart from asking the set questions they had. I think it went ok? Maybe? I have so little idea I can't even properly stress about or second-guess the responses I gave.
Never again if I have the choice, that much is for sure.

I hate those interviews where you're expected to just talk and the interviewer/panel does nothing. It's so lazy of them and it doesn't give a good impression to those being interviewed.
I've just booked flights and accommodation for a half week away in early Nov... first holiday of any sort in well over a year.

At the new workplace, almost everyone on the team works realty long hours. And even before it was that busy, the expectation was that I'd work them too. Which I think is bad because a) there's no evidence that I'd be more productive if I did this, and b) I work as a means to fund my life, and don't want to be at work any longer than absolutely necessary.
Looks like I'll have to work this weekend to meet a deadline. I know I shouldn't complain, but damn.

Start casting that job net again.. I don't mind putting in a few extra hours here and there as required and I do that most out of everyone in the office (part of being the Ops Manager), but jesus.storm84 wrote: ↑20 Oct 2017, 15:19At the new workplace, almost everyone on the team works realty long hours. Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
Trying to explain to the less tech savvy that their computer isn't slow and that it's the website they're trying to access that's slow is an arduous task.
Every other website loads fine, it was just this particular one and suddenly "my computer is shit"
I ended up using the analogy of "Let's say your computer is a car and the website you're going to is the destination, you're stuck in traffic - do you say there's a fault with the car or is the fault at trying to get to the destination?"

@Disco, I'm on a fixed contract here, so my time runs out at the end of February anyway. I shouldn't complain given the money, but it doors bother me a little that it's an expectation each weekend wether we are in crunch mode or not.

Do you at least get paid for that overtime? Unpaid work is a big no-no.

Yeah, if you can deal with the excess work, reap the benefits whilst you can. Extra money always useful.

I went out tonight for a lovely Italian dinner and drinks with the OH tonight, with the justification that I'll earn back the money tomorrow. So, yeah, probably shouldn't complain too much. Not while I'm living la dolce vita at least...

Well, working on a Saturday was everything I expected it to be. I don't know how my co-workers who do it every week have the stamina. I'm exhausted and all I've done is sit and code all day.

Don't know whether people were moving out or in across the road last night, but the truck reversing beeps at 11.30pm were quite loud. Hard to be mad though, because if you're trying to shift stuff in or out of a house that late at night you've probably had a bad enough day already without the neighbours glaring at you.

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
I've done the whole 12-14 hour days + weekends stuff before and never again, it's a much younger persons game. My customer at the time promised that if I got his site done within his ridiculous timeframe, he'd send me on a overseas holiday. So 4 months of solid 70 hour weeks, and between 2 of us coded an entire bespoke ASP.NET + Flash internet magazine solution, allowing Google searching and deep linking of Flash content, it was really state of the art stuff at the time.
For that I architected the back-end solution, designed the database, wrote the custom .NET CMS, designed and wrote the custom XML parsing and content replacement middleware, and installed and configured all the dev and production environments. Got it done on time and then... customer renegged on his promise and ended up selling the software. Never again.

Damn, that's awful! Luckily I've been largely shielded from that sort of thing, since government departments usually loathe anything working more than 40 hours a week.
Mauve it is an age thing. 5 years ago I had a pretty demanding assignment, and I seemed to cope with the extra workload - at least for the first 18 months of it. These days not so much.

Thinking the end is near for Android. Pixel 2 looks like an absolute failure and I've no interest in Samsung.
Might look in to getting an iPhone X.
I've still got my HTC One M9, best damn phone I ever got but the last security patch it's ever received was in January :/

contract is almost up on my S7, then I'll move onto something else and it can live in its VR headset, not sure what I want to get yet

The market is pretty flat really, nothing new, nothing innovative.NotThatDoug wrote: ↑24 Oct 2017, 15:19contract is almost up on my S7, then I'll move onto something else and it can live in its VR headset, not sure what I want to get yet

Re: Fleeting/Random/Thoughts
If Android and Apple users are saying there's nothing innovative, think how us Windows Phone users feel with no new Windows Phone product since the 950 and 950XL?
