Rio Olympic Games 2016

Post by NotThatDoug » 26 Jul 2016, 12:40

It's almost here, the 1 time I'll care about competitive weight lifting and synchronised swimming for the next 4 years.

What events are you looking forward to?
What events do you think Australia has a good shot at winning?
Will Rios mayor make good on his promise to stick a kangaroo in the athletes village?
How long until those involved in picking Rio are brought up on massive corruption charges?
What are the odds an athlete will actually die at this event?

Interesting questions Doug...

equestrian is my favourite and I will make time to watch though I'm not sure how much channel 7 will offer; and any other event that bruce mcavaney isn't commentating, imo the worst sports commentator ever and if he didn't make it back so much better the afl would be lol

Sounds as though things are not going so well over there, not sure how accurate the reports are but it makes me wonder why they choose places like this to host the Olympics.

Anyway, I'll be checking out some of the shooting, but have zero interest in the rest of it.

I'm mostly looking forward to the track and field, weight lifting, table tennis and wrestling.

Looking for the channel 7 schedule and it looks like they will be streaming every event online https://7rio2016.com.au/coverage Still looking for a schedule that shows me actual times the events start.

I'm assuming they will just be using someone else for the coverage of the events Bruce won't be doing. If you really didn't want him back you can probably find someone on Rio craigslist to take care of that cheaply....

Let's not be discussing having somebody whacked, even as a joke, okay? :)

Will not be paying attention to non-sports like synchronised swimming or unnecessarily fluffy sports like rhythmic gymnastics. Will skip golf too. Because it's not like I watch it when it's normally on TV either!
Do hope to catch some archery though I expect there won't be a lot of it on regular telly. Ditto fencing! Definitely some weightlifting, because the weights those people lift are craaaazy.

Hope nobody dies. Or contracts Zika. Or cholera or dysentry from the sketchy athlete accomodation.

I know The Last Leg (with Adam Hills) is covering the Paralympics, has anyone heard of any good coverage from other places? e.g. Roy & HG doing a Brazilian Dream?

I wasn't suggesting whacked, I was just thinking he could be kidnapped, until at least the first Wednesday in November...

Im sure we'll get bombarded with swimming by channel 7. Might catch a few random events or just say that i will and then look at the medal tally when its over

Some of the swimmers going swim/train at the club my partner coaches at, so I imagine it'll be on at home and I won't avoid seeing some of it. I normally try and watch some of the team sports like hockey and basketball, will see how we go this year though

I like watching the team cycling thing and trying to work out wtf the rules are. The bikes look cool too.

I will attempt to catch some Hockey, and the track and field stuff. Don't really care about most of the rest.

I'll watch whatever piques my interest when I'm channel surfing. The time differences aren't exactly great for dedicating myself to a particular event.

Saw this and was in full agreement until I realised were talking about the summer Olympics, and thus the wrong kind of hockey.

The women's rugby 7s has easily been the most entertaining event I've seen so far. You never know what you'll see (from total lack of commitment right through to world class skills and talent) and it's brilliant because of it. I'd recommend giving a game a watch if you get the chance, they only last about 15min start to finish.

Interesting watching the judo, which I rarely see, from the constant sparring to the explosive insta-win moves. Every loser looked absolutely crushed when they lost.

weightlifting 56kg class this morning was intense, amazed that someone at 56 kg can lift 170 kg.

womens rugby sevens is great to watch and we should do well and the cycling road has delivered some serious pain in both womens and mens.

and good to see all 3 of 7's channels being used coverage has been pretty good, unfortunately for me all of the equestrian is late night to early morning.

Yes, while I haven't necessarily agreed with what 7 has chosen to show across its channels it is bloody great to have them actually showing different things across them and intermittently letting us know what's on the various channels and what else you can access via the app. When they cut from the gymnastics last night to go to the tennis (because an Aussie was going to get whooped by Serena Williams) I swapped over to the women's cycling road race. So much better than the old days!

gold for the women's rugby 7, great game NZ controlled the ball well but some awesome tackling by the aussies put huge pressure on the kiwis; ella green and charlotte caslick were outstaning but the whole aussie team put in a great effort and a well deserved win... looking forward to the mens comp.

the men's team gymnastics was amazing, Japan won the gold but all those finalist teams were awesome, even the russians who got silver.

I've only heard the comment twice and yet I am already completely over it... they are using the very bad pun of "OMG it's a Rio-ality!" on the radio... Image

I've also been waiting 4 years to use this while I remember to : Image

So I've just now realised that with using the Channel 7 app/website you can go back and watch on demand any and all events that've happened. I've been staying up to all hours watching things live and struggling with unreliable streams like an idiot because I thought I'd miss seeing them if I didn't :?

You'd think countries would build their Rugby 7 teams around speed and finesse, but Fiji didn't. Fiji went with brutality. I think the USA team is going to be feeling that match last night for the rest the Olympics.

Hoping for a Fiji/Japan final.

Aus v Brazil women's soccer today was unexpectedly good. I haven't watched a women's game in more than a decade, their skills have come a long way since then. Less flailing then I remember, more genuine talent.
