EA not attending E3 2016, hosting own solo event instead

Post by NewsBot » 28 Jan 2016, 10:31

Electronic Arts announced today that they are relinquishing their booths on showfloor of E3 2016, instead choosing to stage an off-site event that will be 'more accessible to fans'.

EA is weird. And can you imagine the lines to try the games with the general public having easy access? Weird weird weird.

It sorta explains the extent to how far EA have their head up their own bum.

Didn't Nintendo basically pull out of E3 too (Or at least cut down what they did there)? Bethesda doesn't go every year, maybe EA have done the numbers and they feel they can get a better return from doing their own thing?

Yeah nintendo just do their Nintendo Directs now and show stuff on the floor.

How long until we see an end to the cringy stage shows with random musicians or athletes who don't really care about the games at all?

Think Bethesda go every year they have something to show, usually don't do their own standalone press conference though. That's why their one last year was surprising?

Guess it makes a certain amount of sense, they'd no longer be competing with the ridiculous volume of all the other exhibitors so they don't have to make their booth super loud?

It doesn't make sense from a marketing point of view though as E3 would have people attending not necessarily interested in EA or know what EA has to offer for which it's their job to convert or coerce new fans. Private events really are for people who are already fans and everyone else will just read the news as it filtres down the internet.

Exclusive company conventions are fair enough if you have the fanbase and catalogue to hold such a thing, such as Blizzard and Nintendo.

But let's face it, EA doesn't exactly win in the dedicated fanbase competition.

EA has fans? Doubling with the Donald Trump rally, I suppose.

Some one has to buy the battlefield and battlefront games... They are never great games, but still sell...

Even if EA has lots of fans would you still go to an EA convention if you weren't a fan to see what's coming up on the EA calander?

most people can't attend E3 anyway, and an EA convention with announcements of any sort will get just as much media coverage, and with potentially less other coverage to compete with.

EDIT: They also do 4.5 Billion in revenue, don't let the internet echo chamber fool you into thinking that everyone (ie general consumers) hates EA

It's not about success I just think pulling out of trade shows is a stupid thing to do. In fact their success means they should really be sticking with E3.
Makena wrote: most people can't attend E3 anyway
The general public can't attend most trade shows anyway and trade shows have a lot more people there than just media, however you'll have much more media coverage anyway at a trade show than you would at your own thing. EA and anyone else who hold their own thing (like Apple) are going to have exactly 1 demographic, press specific to EA and some fans. If everyone starts pulling out it makes the cost less justifiable to send staff out, makes it hard for aspiring employees to get information about employment, makes it hard aspiring devs to get their product out, it makes less people attend, less feed back on R&D hardware, less attendance it incites more devs to pull out causing a chain reaction. It's just bad for everyone really.

If they have something decent to report on then this shouldn't be an issue. I can't even remember what EA announced at E3 last year. Battlefront maybe?

EDIT: Turns out they showed Battlefront, Unraveled, Need for Speed, Mirrors edge, some DLC for The Old Republic, a star wars collectible card game for mobile, 2 sports games and another ftp/micro-transaction plants vs zombies game.

I imagine they must have looked into this and decided it's worth the effort to host their own event, and think they're going to get a better return. They, after all, have access to whatever data they've used to make this decision, we don't, they won't have just decided to do this for funsies.

And if lots of people start pulling out of E3, there's probably reasons for it, beyond just other people pulling out, and if that chain reaction kills E3, maybe E3 has been doing things that don't actually help attendees.

As well as Battlefield/Battlefront EA also has all of the sports games, The Sims, SWTOR, Mass Effect and Dragon Age and so on. They've got more than enough stuff to show off if they want to do their own thing alongside E3.

E3's died before, not even a little worried about E3 itself.

Wow. EA.

"we don't like this game distribution model that's already there, let's make our own. Oh and we don't like this trade show, let's go make our own trade show instead."

Next up: "we don't like all these consoles, let's make our own instead!" I can actually see that happening.

Even more to that is "We don't like making money when we release new games, let's make a subscription paywall and force everyone to give us money every month"

Well this is my problem. Big companies like EA are throwing a tantrum because it's not more about them and pulling out. Trade shows are an industry thing not a "I don't like it because I want it run MY way" thing. Companies don't have to attend the presentations every year so imo EA they should take a leaf out of Bethesda's book and book a hall when they actually have something to present, otherwise partake in the normal trade show etiquette and have a booth. To me it just screams "maximum corporate returns!" instead of "we are passionate about making video games".

EA doing that? I'm shocked, shocked!

This seems the norm with any publisher - they aren't development houses but are massive corporate machines designed to churn out games.

A company that wants to make money... and on top of that, more money than they're currently making... How strange?
