I suppose in the mean time I need to skill up. Other than practice, anyone have any tips?

- Get to know the "kick off" positions so that you know if you should hold defence or take the kick off. (Certain positions are closer to the ball)
- Pickup boost every chance you get, but save them for when they are really needed.
- Flipping down the field is a better way of covering distance quickly, and doesn't use up your boost.
- Always be mindful of defence, and be prepared to jump back to a goalie position if you are the player closest to your defensive end.
- Learn when to leave the ball. Chasing it mindlessly isn't always the best option (but is what you see many rookies do)
- Don't give too many fucks about mistakes, and just have fun!

Always happy to arrange a few practice games too :)

That's a good idea. Probably best to get all the "why the hell would you do that?!" moments out of the way with before we start.

I've found I like 3v3 a lot more than 2v2.

Those 3v3 games I did with you and Moose were the most fun I've had playing Rocket League, I got in trouble for laughing so loud while my partner was trying to sleep... still need to go through the replays and find the good/lucky shots we made.

In suckier news you can't buy the rocket league 4 pack if you already own the game, I was going to buy it cause I wanted to give 3 copies out to 3 mates and the 4 pack is the same price as buying 3 individual copies then I was going give the 4th copy away randomly to go under the secret santa tree.

The standard 3v3 is what I play nearly every time I fire up Rocket League. I've tried 4v4 and hated it, as it just becomes a clusterfuck of people rushing the ball mindlessly, but 3v3 is just right. The only reason I've gone 2v2 for this is that it creates a few more teams and it is easier to organise 4 people to get together than it is 6. That said, there is still time to turn this into a 3v3 thing if that is preferred by the majority, but it means scrapping everything so far and redrawing teams etc. Totally open to it if it's what the people want though!

3v3 would be good fun... but maybe next tournament.
As we are close to the start of this one, and it seems a lot of work to suddenly scrap everything and start again.

Nah, stick with 2v2 this time and we'll see how it goes... the other issue with 3v3 is that you need more people and we're only a little group of incredibly awesome and really, really ridiculously good looking people.

1v1 is great fun! Though if your opponent is good it can be really deflating getting your ass handed to you for 5 minutes! (had it done to me )

I've just been playing Unfair Bots, 2v1. Man that is punishing! They don't let you get away with many mistakes. Finally won a game against them after many (many!) restarts. I'd say this is my new favourite practice advice, playing 2v1 with the bots soon makes you learn from your mistakes and how you can do better! Certainly kept me busy defending!

Just had a couple of good games with Mini. We managed a few good wins too and got the teamwork thing happening pretty quick, but I think during the last game the smell of pizza in the oven was distracting me far too much, because I missed every damn thing! If Tera is any good they might be ones to watch!

Haha... that last game was horrible from both of us...

After that I had a few good games with Matty and Moose.
They play well together, if we didn't crash into each other so often we would have won a couple more games.

Really enjoyed playing with a few PA guys tonight, next time I need team speak on...

Are you just doing to Rookie Aerial stuff? Anything higher than that isn't too important, but the Rookie level training for it is quite handy. I always imagine it is like playing the old moonlander game, thrusting my rockets bit by bit to get in the position I want

Yep, I was only doing rookie for that... I did higher levels on some of the others, but not on Aerial.

I may or may not have just giggled like a swedish schoolgirl at this setence - I blame sleep deprivation

I'm finding the ball cam useless for judging aerial manoeuvres. Never seem to be able to get into the right position with that camera. But the follow-cam is useless for everything else.

Started playing with pro-bots and I'm getting the hang of a lot now. The way I score goals:
1. I put the ball into the general area and the opposing team ricochets it in.
2. I put the ball vaguely in the direction of the goal from distance, overshoot the mark when I'm trying to give it a final boost only to have a chasing car slam it for me.
3. Something I intended to do off the ground.
4. Smacking opponents into the ball to go in.
5. Something I intended to do in the air.

The other thing I've found is I'm still having the occasional moment where I think it's all lined up, only to realise at the last second I've misjudged it. This still happens when I'm playing defence a lot.

I've got over 100 hours play time racked up in this game now and I still do that too, so don't feel bad about it! Sometimes I blame the deadzone on my gamepads stick, as it seems to not register a slight move and then see it as a double move which makes me to a sudden leap left or right when I only intended to realign myself a bit.
storm84 wrote:4. Smacking opponents into the ball to go in.
I had the funniest moment yesterday where my own team mate found himself pushing the ball down the field in reverse, so I boosted right at him which gave him a nice jolt and helped him to reverse kick a goal for half way down the field. I saved the replay because it was just perfect. Might have to make a .gif out of it later!

EDIT -

Oh and try the camera settings below. I discovered them through watching a YouTube video with advice from high level players, and I've found it to be quite good! I'm always on ball cam, except for when I want to pick up a boost or destroy an opponents car!

I will need to look at those settings, might make it a bit easier to see some shit while on ball cam...
Amazing the amount of times I have cleaned up a team mate going for the ball

It's 30% off through Steam at the moment too, as part of their sale. Might save you having to go through a 3rd party :) I picked up the Back to the Future & Battle-Cars DLCs yesterday (Mainly so I could chase a few more achievements)
