Graphics Cards Discussions

Post by Mini » 11 Jul 2016, 12:11

So with the release of new cards for both sides of the fence, I thought it would be good to get some discussion going.

This is also something to help myself in what to look at in the future for upgrades, if there is sufficient conversations and want, I might look at adding in some price brackets and best options within those brackets :)

Gives me an excuse to research cards :D

And to start the discussion, and the reason I added this thread...

I'm looking at a sub $300 card to upgrade my 650Ti, currently looking at the R9 380 4GB, or trying to see if I save a bit and get the 960 is worth the money. Currently sitting on the side of the 380, (mainly due to having serious issues with NVidia drivers lately)

Sub $300 is a tricky market, if you can stretch slightly further (assuming they eventually end up in stock) an 4GB XFX RX480 from pccasegear for $319 would probably be pretty great.

Agreed on the 480, I'm hoping with another month that we will get some other companies making them, and maybe a lower price.
Had heard some bad things about them frying motherboards, but all looks to have been fixed.

And yes, hoping I can save a few dollars over the next few weeks / months to get a bit better card...

The nvidia GeForce 1060 is also coming "soon" and promising good performance for a lower price than the 1070s. 960s can be had for just under $300 though, still with 4GB of ram. That's going to be important, apparently.
Realistically you can go around and around in circles on this, and if you wait even a month everything will have shifted. Parts shopping is a pain. :)

saving a few extra $$and going for a 480 now that the drivers are out addressing the power issue they look to be performing well and like others have said the 1060 comes out in a few days. Personally i'm upgrading this month to a 1070, they perform really well considering they're 3-400 dollars cheaper than the 1080.

So many cards to choose from. Good time to be in the market for a video card.

Truthfully, for the cheaper build, I would go for the rx480 as the bonus for them is that they still support crossfire, which should you choose you want to get another rx480 in the future to boost your performance, then you still can. Nvidia have removed SLI option from 1060's.

AMD have just piss farted around for so long, I just wish they would get their other cards out sooner rather then later. While personally I would most likely still buy a Nvidia card in the future, competition from AMD means that prices would drop to much healthier levels. And if they are better then they might get me back as a customer.

Also info on the rest of my PC...
Currently running a i5-4460, 8GB ram, and an old 22" monitor that only goes to 1680*1050 (16:10 ratio)
So I'm not looking for top end graphics, I'm just looking for something to give me a good boost to my current 650Ti (Which is everything currently out)

For 1680? You'll most likely be ok with anything you choose, I dare say anything around the 300 mark will be able to max out the settings in any game. If it were me I'd save up the extra 50 or so and get a 480 or 1060 because newer.

1060 prices have been released, and slightly more than I was hoping for.
$430 to $600 seems to be the price range currently.

So the lower end still looks like the RX 480 is the one to look at.

This ^

You just have to bite the bullet and buy something, not caring that there will be another release in a few months or new architecture in 6. If you dont then you never end up buying anything.

480 > 1060. I'd recommend getting a custom 480 though. Better cooling and performance for the $$. I also wouldn't recommend looking for anything less than the new generation now unless it was for non-gaming purposes.

Plan is to see what the next batch of 480's are like, hoping for some better looking than that full black box...
And I will need to save for a couple of months to get that sort of money now... Rego killed me...

Hmm... 1060 price decrease makes it a lot more interesting...

So performance wise... 1060 vs 480??
All benchmarks that I can find are showing the 1060 as the better card, but the extra 2GB of RAM on the 480 (or 470 for that matter) has to have an impact.

480, especially if you know the games you're going to play are going to be DX12/Vulkan.

All the stuff I've seen (for gaming) show them pretty much the same, imo it comes down to the better deal ie price or free games or whatever.

My budget has got slightly lower, so now looking at the 470 4GB...
And this takes into account that I won't be playing on resolutions over 1080p, as my monitor doesn't even do that (Old 16:10 res monitor) and my TV is only 1080p. Neither of which I will be upgrading soon.

So I'm trying to work out if the extra $60 from This 470 to This 480 is worth it... and I just don't think so for what I'm going to be playing at.

Probably isn't, from what I understand 4GB 480s generally have slower ram than the 8GB model, so you won't see a huge performance gain.

Went with the 470.
Didn't want anything high end, and when putting it with a i5 4460, should make some nice improvements.
Well... anything would be an improvement on the 650 Ti that I currently have.

Grats Mini. Let us know what sort of improvements you're seeing.

I'm still running off my GTX 760 here. Don't have much of a need to upgrade (D3 and HOTS... about all I have time for atm as a minor means to chill out at the end of each day... runs fine on my rig) and those noises that sounded like the HDD was being overworked seems to have stopped (touch wood). Just as well, the past two or three weeks have been expensive for me.
