Being of Asian background, my parents give me cash in traditional red envelopes. So at least giving money is more accepted in some cultures :)

I prefer being given cash, but I also find that if I get cash I'm less likely to spend it on something for myself and more often than not it just gets spent on medial things, like a kebab, or petrol

^ This. Cash was great when I was a kid/teen because I ~always~ spent it on something fun... now, I'd just fill up my car or buy Friday night take away.

He hit that jump harder than he needed too. I guess they didn't calculate the speed he needed to be going to make the jump and land in the ideal position.

Work is really long and tedious when everyone is just waiting for the week to end and holidays to begin. Half the section has already gone on leave, so the mandatory team-based festivities are already done with. So there's not even that to break up the tedium this week.

DarkMellie wrote:11 years I've been in this role, successfully leading teams and working in a business that has taught me what it truly means to be a professional person. For the last 6 years I've been ready to step-up. Problem is, there aren't any opportunities in Tasmania, but meanwhile I saw peers at our mainland sites moving on to bigger and better things. So I stayed ready, I had review after review that complimented me on, effectively, not becoming jaded and staying as a high performing leader. I sold my house and moved my family south to chase opportunities (3 manager spots down here, 1 back in Launceston).

I got to Hobart and within a year, the business split down the middle and my old boss left his role to take on a higher role on the mainland. Now, suddenly in Hobart, there were two managers. And just as suddenly we had a new exec manager, a witless fool, my colleague (effectively the 'me' of Hobart) was already seconded into the managers role at this point... so when it came time to appoint, the exec came down and interview me and my peer. My peer got the job, deservedly so(he's a crackingly good human being), but the exec commented to my old exec 'I didn't even realise there was another contender'. Jesus christ.

Swallow it down, continue to perform. I work a complex, challenging role with great people in a great business and am well rewarded for it. I don't really have anything to lose.

But this month, out of nowhere, finally, my opening. My colleague, now my boss, is heading off and up and I of course interviewed for the role. And just now, I've been told that I got it. I'm in. Seconded, as is my boss in his new role... so as long as he smashes it and gets appointed and I've smashed it, I'll get appointed too. I'll be running a lending arm of a major bank, upholding our vision and values, developing our team leaders to be the best they can be and holding everyone on our site accountable for their contributions.

I'm quite a private person in real life, on this forum too if you ignore my game ramblings. This is my one post, my one place to share that excitement. To everyone else, I'm calm and focused on the challenges to come... and by god am I ready!
Secondment Update: Nailed it! For all I had to offer, I was an unknown element to my new GM, so we went from weird conversations where he was trying to figure me out (and I was virtually begging for a shot), to him making a special trip into Hobart last week just to do my interim performance review and offer me the position. Having him tell me about how I've smashed the six months, how he's so happy to have me on the team and more nice things was just a beautiful revelation and an exclamation point on an enormously challenging six months.

So that's it. I'm in this quasi-exec role... normally I'd be in a contact centre manager role reporting to an EM who reports to a GM.. but there's no EM in Hobart so I report straight up to the GM and get to participate and contribute in steering the entire business. This means a lot of extra time spent on project working groups, steering committees and a far greater involvement and accountability for budgets.. that on top of the core role of keeping the centre going and ensuring the TLs are being challenged to support their teams in the right way.. but goddamn am I loving every second of it!

Of course, I didn't do a single bit of the work that got the results by which our centre is measured, so i'm stupidly thankful for the amazingly talented people I get to work with. We are number one in the country for just about every measure you can poke a stick at!

So I've just worked out that in the last 5 and a half years, I've spent $4,800 on computer parts, which is $872 averaged over those years, or $16.78 per week.

I got Android Pay up and running 2 days ago. It feels gimmicky, but I'm totally geeking out over the gimmick.
