EDIT: Moved my Paradox ramblings to their own thread.

Instead, let's talk about Everspace.

It's a roguelike and it's fucking gorgeous. You simply fly around, die a lot, then spend whatever money you made each run on upgrading your ship and abilities. It's an endless loop and it is SO MUCH FUN. Multiple weapons, items and rockets, frenzied combat, sweet little gameplay wrinkles in each sector... it's a barrel of fun.

Somewhat reminiscent of House of the Dying Sun... but better.

Here's the cockpit view (which I don't play from).

Image

And here's some shots from the exceptionally clever 'Action Freeze'. Title is what it does, grab it at the right time and you can get some glorious combat shots.

Me in the middle, G&B friendly trader ship at the top, taking on an AI main character, Seth Nobu, in Sector 3

Image

My wtf moment, wondering why my screen was flickering and I was losing control of my ship.. the light-grey circle is a black hole. Oopsie!!

The mechanics of it can be a little heavy but the rhythm becomes very clear the more you play it. What I find is that it, like EUIV, is just a map.

A map... and it tells grand and glorious stories of the world. That write up above... can you imagine if I was playing Assassin's Creed or any other story based game and I did a 500 word screed on the storyline? It would be madness. But the alternate histories from Paradox games are just so good to experience and tell.

There's something truly brilliant and special about a game that is just a static image with bits moving on top and blows my tiny mind with its hyper-alternate-realities.

imo, of course :)

EDIT: Moved my Paradox stuff to another thread and replaced the post above with some stuff about Everspace.

Everspace is so awesome, and it runs really well for how amazing it looks.

Also, it finally happened!

I've been dead a few times and been part of squad wins, but this was my first win whilst still alive, and getting most of the kills. Our duo took out 1/5th of the server.

Freespace?
Never played it... Freelancer though... that game was AWESOME!

Nicely done Jambo, I think I have been alive for 1 or 2 of my wins... never been a high kill one like that though.
Also for those interested in watching an Oceania tournament, the PUBG OCE Discord channel is currently running a 4 person squad competition.
I am part of a team in the Pan division and we are currently in 5th. They stream the games on their Twitch Channel and have fairly good commentary too. https://discord.gg/8hwzGkg

If you manage to get into some of the later stages in Everspace, I'd recommend having sunglasses handy.

I... guys... I just put up a reasonably lengthy post up about it. Am I that spammy that my words are invisible now?

:P

Roguelike. FTL-like Sector advancement, get to the end to get to a new sector. Fight bandits, disable jump-jammers, collect bits and pieces to repair on the fly, but most importantly cash to upgrade your ship. Upgrades carry into your next life, money does not.

Rinse repeat.

I really enjoyed FTL. If there's another game like it, I'd want to play it.

On the current game of Frozen Cortex with DarkMellie, I'm taking screenshots and using FRAPS to record gameplay so hopefully I can use it to make some sort of post explaining the strategy that goes into a game.

It was quite fascinating on the last turn where I considered DM had two options for cutting me off, and effectively I had to flip an internal coin as to which one he'd use. Instead he goes for a completely different strategy I hadn't considered so I could have scored (and did score) either way.

An important thing to note is that it handles like a 6DoF shooter, very similar in controls to Freelancer I guess (kb/m are best). It is not what you'd really call a traditional space sim type game in any sense of the control scheme.

Some people like to draw parallels of the map to FTL, except it seems more like Lylat Wars in that you plot a path based on sector difficulty/hazards and not some advancing armada overlay.

The movement is so silky smooth too.. such a great 'feel' to the game.

I recorded some gameplay just now, including my first Drone-Carrier kill... but it picked up my Spotify in the background and kinda ruined the whole thing.

Hugely recommend it goes on people's wishlists at least!

Yeah that was one of those things where the options were clear (corner throw or a running play) but a 50% chance is still high risk, thought you might go something unorthodox and saw a play that I'd have run but it didn't go my way... that's the beauty of playing the player though!

I wish Disco and Mini would have their turns :(

Will get it done tonight. Sorry Mellie and Storm.

All good. My desktop is still in pieces from the move, so I've only been able to do bits and pieces on the laptop in between everything else that's going on this week.

I just grabbed the Wood Elves, so I will be jumping on to test them out.
Should be a different play style to everyone else... Might have to do more hit and runs...

We've only got one game going. Now than happy for you to start up another.

Since I'm only on my Laptop, I've installed a bunch of games I think the laptop can handle. So this weekend I'll try out at least one of Stellaris, Democracy 3, Big Pharma, or Satellite Reign, and possibly give Invisible Inc. another go.

EVERSPACE... currently $23.99USD and worth every goddamn cent...

Image

A very unfortunate spawning point...

Dangerous start at the Russian GP. Heavy rain saw the safety car come out straight away. After losing pole due to overly aggressive AI driving, we lined up for an insanely boring 5 laps while we cleared water from the driving line...

Image

Mmmmm dat Mercedes....

Image

Second lap after the Safety Car, I ducked in for some Soft tyres... two whole laps before the other drivers. Managed to keep it on track and am now on lap 20 and a good 15 seconds in-front. Good times!
