Oh yeah, i think each of my managers has had a good (conservative guess) 8 weeks off in the last 12 months.

I wish the media would stop giving Tony Abbott air time. I mean, I get why they're doing it - He's just an out and out shit stirrer and that makes for good TV. But I can't see how it's doing Australia any good.

The media's role isn't to help Australia, it's to make money. Unfortunately diseases like Tony Abbott get attention. He (like Rudd before him) should have gotten out of politics the moment they were knifed.

The problem with the media isn't that it's first priority is to report news anymore, it's that it's first priority is to be first, regardless of facts, and should be punishable.

I've found myself less compelled to look at the news lately... other countries have politicians that are idolised. We have clowns for politicians.

Taking 6 weeks at the end of this week... first holiday in 15 months.

Y'all need to take a break, seriously unhealthy to not take 4 weeks a year and shame on your workplaces for not enforcing that!

New job starts on Wednesday, and I've developed a cough / fever. Hope this passes quickly! It's a good thing they needed a couple of extra days for paperwork.

Though today has been sitting at home reading and watching Sons of Anarchy. Not really making b the most of my time off tbh.

Well, I've probably taken the equivalent of 4 weeks off per annum in both flex time and carer's leave which is deducted from my sick leave balance (seriously, I've never had my sick leave so low in any previous workplace). We get 10 days of sick leave per annum right? So that's two weeks off per year there already.

And I do have plans to take an 80 day tour (probably a full 3 months off) once I save up enough leave so I'll eventually make up for it.

Hope you get better quick storm!

That's another thing my boss hates, carers leave, mind you we do have a staff member that takes a day half day at least every second week because of her kids

He does, but it depends on whether you abuse it as well - he was surprisingly fine when you needed to take a day off when I had some complications last month. It helps that he likes me though

I definitely feel like I have abused carers leave. I had next to no sick leave for myself when I last got sick - lol

Got an evening of finalizing dad's retirement documents. Yay.

Looks like the illness won, and I'm going to need to delay starting at the new workplace. Probably not the best first impression, but neither is going to work and sneezing/coughing on my new coworkers.

I usually find going into work when there's that last hint of croakiness in one's throat the best thing to do to get rid of any thoughts from colleagues that you were just wagging work. The expression on their faces is usually one that says "I'm glad they stayed home!"

Hope you feel better soon mate!

One thing I like about my job is that sick days are never questioned - we have a fairly strict policy about not attending when sick, as it's not good if staff are passing on lurgies to kids (or the families of kids) so are already very unwell. Also, it's in our conditions of stay that we can ask guests with contagious illnesses to leave (or quarantine them in their room), kinda hard to enforce that if the illness started with a staff member.

Went for my HR driving test today. Had a good yarn with the assessor while doing it, wandered all over town, my hour of driving was up before I even realised. Passed without any problems at all.

So much less stressful than I remember my car license being.

First day at the new job. More than anything, I'm feeling really confused because it's a very different role to what was described to me in the interview. Not regretting joining the department, but I'm not sure if it was a bait-and-switch or a matter of resourcing priorities within the branch.

Glad the contract is only for 4 months.

Had an pretty nice/partially productive start to the weekend...

1. Test drove a Hyundai Santa Fe this morning... was oblivious to the latest features in cars and I don't normally drive a SUV so am not use to a car with a higher center of gravity. Am also a tactile/visual learner so a test drive is a good way for me to get up to speed with things. Didn't even know it was a seven seater so it'll definitely be a contender for future proofing my needs especially if my bro and his GF get hitched and start pumping out babies... need something that'll fit my parents too for day trips.

2. Swung by the Nissan dealership next door to let them know that the girl their Finance Service keeps sending letters to no longer lives at my place. Hopefully they can get their financial services mob to stop sending letters. I've called up and emailed to no avail for a few years now so I'm hoping their own people can sort it out.

3. Decided to take a stroll to the local popular cake shop only to be greeted by a 15 party line. I was thinking of doing a bit of window shopping in order to decide on a cake... not be rushed through so I turned around and went home. I did however find out that an American diner has started up a new shop in the area. About a 10min walk from home with an ice cream parlour 3 shops down too. Would make for a nice dinner out and decent stroll home.

yeah still kicking around, took my son to the eye specialist last week and he reckons he might get some vision out of his bung eye if they remove the cataract that's been there since he was born, or he might not, but it should stop his migraines either way

so that's great news just need to find the magical tree that gives people money for such things

That's good news indeed!

How big a sum are we talking about here?

Who here is good at selling Kickstarter ideas?

It’s not a ridiculous amount but it’s 5 grand that I don’t have floating around. I’ll figure it out somehow, anything for my boys

Good luck, Kharis! Poor little fella :(

Week 2 of my 6 week vacation. Only received one call from work and otherwise haven't given it a thought. Doing the school pick-up/drop-off every day and playing with my youngest during the day... big 4 day holiday booked for Melbourne in two weeks time (will be both their first flights).
