Both says my two local are currently unknown.

Dumping Zed will be tough given that he only needs 34% of the 2PP.

Do you know anything about the independent running in Canberra? Can't tell if he's a joke candidate like Palmer or serious like all the arseholes who aren't Palmer.

Are there any parties that are promising to overturn all of the parliamentary exemptions on
* Anti-spam act
* Do not call register
* Metadata retention
* Truth in advertising
* Encryption breaking
* Probably a bunch of others

Even if it's one of the fringe loonies I might preference them higher. Politicians exempting themselves from laws is some grade A bullshit.

he sounds a tad weird, anyone that talks about a high speed rail is talking piesky and not sure how indi he is; not much choice though the australian progressives look shifty and the rest fall into obvious slots.
The senate looks more fun, will need to do some reading to see who to put last :)

Australian Progressives look like the kind of minor party I like to preferences first out of principle (dislike voting for major parties - it's the luxury we have with preferential voting, where we can signal to a minor party that closely represents our views then direct preferences to the lesser of two evils*). The senate race sucks though. I miss the Democrats.

*evils is a bit harsh when it comes to both the major parties. Mediocre seems a better term. Both major parties are a damn site better than most of the minor parties that parisitise our preference system in the senate.

I love how political parties and charities are exempt from the DNC, they're primarily the people I want to leave me the hell alone.

Certainly not after he spammed so many people with SMSes. It's pretty obvious he's just there for Clive, whatever policies he puts forward are just to get himself elected.

this website is interesting, essentially lists what the candidates voted for and against in the last parliament so you can have a clear understanding of where you local candidates stand on various issues, might be a challenge for the senate but for the reps adds some knowledge.

and this is funny:

gosh there are some crazy stupid parties for the senate, even in the ACT most of them I want to put last but I do feel sorry for the other states absolute mad number of senate hopefuls; I think they should make the bar higher for nomination.

I'm OK with the bar being pretty low. Upholds more of the democratic principles while also acting as a handy survey of the variety of motivated nutters out in the community.

I wouldn't take that cheat sheet as anything close to gospel. The headline often doesn't have much to do with what the party is really about.

RIP to Bob Hawke, the only politician I've ever considered somewhat decent.

To clear up the scare mongering in that Mark Humphries video: You have to number at least 6 boxes above the line, or at least 12 below the line. If you vote below the line you don't need to number them all, using up all the pencils, you can stop at 12. But polling booth staff will sharpen or provide new pencils as needed, or you can take your own pencil or pen with which to vote. It's not a big deal, you won't be the only one voting below the line on the day.

If you'd like to vote below the line it is very easy to find out who is standing for the Senate in your state, just go to the AEC website and plug in your suburb: https://aec.gov.au/election/voting.htm#candidates

A quick Google for the party names will get you to their website and you can work out if they align with your views. It's not hard at all.

In NSW it might even be easier (and better) to vote below the line, depending on your preference. A Labor + Greens ticket would get you to 12, as would a less-likely Liberal+Greens. Liberal+Fraser Anning+One Nation also gets to 12. There are many easier combinations to be had than trying to pick 6 whole parties above the line, to be honest.

You only have to do this once every few years! It's not hard! :)

If you've not voted yet, you still have time! Go vote!

Probably watching ABC News coverage tonight. Antony Green is bloody hopeless but their hosts and guests seem minimally annoying. If anyone wants to recommend another channel I'm all ears!
